A monthly gardening calendar
Select a month below for backyard garden advice - general tips and specific ones for flowers and vegetables.
Rose pruning time again, if you are not sure about how to prune your roses come in and talk to one of our gardeners. After you have finished your pruning remember to spray with a fungicide eg. Limesulphur or Mancozeb. When buying barerooted roses look for strong stems that have not sent out shoots.
Crowns of rhubarb are available this month. Deciduous trees and shrubs can also be planted this month. Make sure you prepare the soil well with lots of organic matter.
The saying "Don't plant a $20 tree in a 20c hole" is very true, your plants will reward you with good strong growth if you prepare the ground well before planting.
If your garden is lacking colour, why not brighten things up with some advanced potted colour, by planting some in the garden or in pots. Take hardwood cuttings this month. Remember to use a hydrangea blueing fertiliser regularly if you want blue hydrangeas this year.
