Our history
In April 1978 Barrow & Bench was created by the Stewart & Coote Families trading from the old Ampol Service Station site at the corner of Unley Road and Fisher Street, Unley, South Australia as a Big H Store.

In August 1982 Barrow & Bench joined the Mitre10 Group and in August 1984 the Stewart Family became the sole owners of the Barrow & Bench outlet.

In March 1987 Barrow & Bench opened a second store on Portrush Road trading as "Glenunga 7 Day Centre". After trading ten years from this restricted location the Glenunga outlet relocated to much larger premises at the old Bi-Lo site of 499 Portrush Road Glenunga.
The Malvern store relocated and moved into the old Fairway Ford site at 321 Unley Road, Unley in October 1999 after completing major reconstruction of the premises.
With Ian Stewart retiring in 2006, the sons Paul and Michael are driving the business forward into the 21st century.
In February 2004 Barrow & Bench opened their third store located in the Happy Valley Shopping Centre on Kenihans Road Happy Valley. A Mitre 10 store had previously been operating on that site for a considerable period.
Our multi award-winning stores of Malvern and Glenunga are always changing as we move forward, to meet our customers’ expectations.
Mitre 10 History
In 1959 a group of eight independent hardware and plumbing retailers formed a cooperative to harness their collective buying and marketing power. They chose the name Mitre 10.

Mitre is a term meaning "joining together" and the 10 signified the number of stores the group aspired to manage. A little over four decades on from its humble beginnings, Mitre 10 has become the biggest hardware brand throughout Australasia, with over 700 stores.
